Self Catering Holiday Cottages in Mid Argyll, Scotland

Achnashelloch Farm Cottages House

Achnashelloch (field of the irises) is a family owned farm run by the Campbells since 1943. The farm is set in the lovely countryside of central Argyll in the West of Scotland and occupies an elevated position, looking towards Dunadd Hill, ancient capital of the Kingdom of Dalriada and beyond that the Moine Mhor or "Great Moss" of Crinan, where the River Add winds its way to the sea.

Argyll is full of interest, having been settled since ancient times. These original inhabitants of Scotland have left their mark on the land in the form of numerous Neolithic burial cairns & standing stones which can be found scattered along Kilmartin Glen, between Achnashelloch and the nearby village of Kilmartin. There is a fascinating museum at Kilmartin which unlocks the secrets of these mysterious sites. There are medieval castles at Carnasserie and Castle Sween, former strongholds of the warring clans (including the Campbells!), who once ruled Argyll.

The nearby Crinan Canal, which avoids the perilous journey round the Mull of Kintyre, is busy all summer with yachts and other pleasure craft making their way through the 15 locks between Ardrishaig and Crinan, heading for the world famous cruising grounds of Scotland's West Coast and Islands. An enjoyable day (or two) can be had walking the nine mile towpath between the two villages and the towpath can be reached from our holiday cottages in around five minutes.

Mid Argyll is a hidden gem, with a wide variety of landscapes, from gentle farmland to wild hills and the beautiful coastline, off which lie the lslands of the Inner Hebrides. Bird enthusiasts and watchers of wildlife will find plenty to interest them and the opportunities for outdoor activities are endless. For keen walkers & cyclists, there are numerous marked trails and, within reach, several Munros to be bagged. The sea is 10 minutes away with a sandy beach at Crinan Ferry.

There is village shop at Kilmartin, a supermarket and other shops at nearby Lochgilphead, the administrative centre of Argyll and plenty of eating places to enjoy local produce in the surrounding villages. Lochgilphead also has indoor sporting facilities and a public swimming pool. Achnashelloch Holiday Cottages are an ideal base from which to explore this magical part of Scotland.
